Sunrise, Sunset, and Night

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork….In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun….It’s rising is from one end of the heaven, and its circuit to the other end; and there is nothing hidden from its heat. Psalm 19:1,4b, 6 (NKJV)

Several weeks ago, I stood in my yard and watched the sunset. The sky was orange, pink, purple, and blue. It was breathtaking. I stayed there watching it, and thanking Creator God for His artwork in the sky. As I contemplated God’s handiwork, I thought of how He is with me throughout the day and night.

When the sunrise spreads its colors, it shows me that God has blessed me with another beautiful day. It’s full of promise, for God is in it. His love, His kindness, and His guidance will be with me all day. His glory is declared in the heavens. His mercy endures forever (Psalm 136).

Sunset also demonstrates the beauty of God’s work as He closes the day. Beautiful, often vibrant, colors decorate the sky like a beautiful quilt to wrap up my day. Lingering remnants of sunlight streak the sky with the reminder that the Lord is always with me, even in the darkness that will follow.

I need only to look up to see the moon and stars. These lights in the sky remind me that God still lights my way in the darkness. Even when clouds obscure my view and all I see is darkness, He is still there, just as the sun, moon, and stars are still in their places.

Daylight will come again. God will lovingly light my way.

We can be assured that God’s care for us goes beyond the light of the sun, moon, and stars. We can thank God that his presence is with us in all circumstances, too.

God is with us in happy times, and in times that we can see part of the path of His plans for us. When we see only the darkness of health issues, broken relationships, sin, and confusion, God still is with us. He will never let go of His hold on us. He’s waiting for us to turn to Him. He sees through the darkness, for He is light.

One dark period that God saw me through was when my mother died of cancer in 1996. It was only weeks between hearing her cancer had returned and her death. I couldn’t see God’s purpose like I had when my father died ten years earlier. Then, I could see Dad grow close in his relationship with Jesus. Dad spoke of Jesus’ faithfulness to him, and as a result some of his friends put their trust in Jesus. With Mom, I had to learn that I could cling to God in my grief. In time, God helped me to see that He was still in control even though I didn’t understand. He showed Himself faithful and trustworthy. God still loved me. He never abandoned me, even when I didn’t sense His presence.

Let’s praise the Lord.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Psalm 107:1 (NLT)

Thank you, Heavenly Father. Amen
