About Kathryn

Hello! I’m Kathryn Hughes, writing in 2022 and later under the pen name Kathryn Breckenridge, as well as under my name, Kathryn Hughes.

I’m an author of devotionals, both for this blog, for events, and in 2023, my devotional book His Broken Treasure was released as an ebook and as an paperback book. (More below.) I also write gardening articles and historical fiction, both for children and historical romance.

I write devotionals that post to this website every other Thursday. You can look up past devotionals under “Devotional Archives.” More devotionals are in the works, some with guest co-writers. Some of my devotionals reveal how God uses the garden and agriculture to reveal truths and lessons about living for the Lord.

In 1997 I became a contributing writer to the Poway Progress newspaper, using my gardening teacher background and degree in Ornamental Horticulture for writing my garden column, Farm & Garden.

The Poway Progress newspaper also features some of my historical fiction. The Exciting Adventures of the Trent Twins is a children’s historical fiction placed in the 1890s of Poway, and the surrounding areas of San Diego County, California. (Published 2005-2020, 2021-present. It is a sequel to Rebecca, the story of the Trent Twins’ parents, Rebecca and Jim. (1997-2005)

My various historical fiction works live in the 1850s-1890s in the United States, and in World War II England and Europe.

I wish to entertain you and help you grow, and help your garden grow, too.

Please leave me a comment or questions on my contact page. I look forward to getting to know you.

~ Kathryn

His Broken Treasure is a 31-day devotional designed to be read along with Kathleen Denly’s historical novel Murmur in the Mud Caves. We’ve all felt broken or unvalued at times, but His Broken Treasure helps take readers deeper into the themes of Kathleen Denly’s Murmur in the Mud Caves and remind them how treasured they are by the One who matters most.

A Little More About Me

I grew up in California with my dad, mom, brother, and grandfather, where I enjoyed stories of family history, life in California, the Midwest, Canada, and England, and of World War II. I received my B.S. Degree in Ornamental Horticulture from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. It was at church in San Luis Obispo that I met my husband, Cliff. We settled in southern California and we’re blessed with a daughter and son, now grown adults.

Writing has always interested me, which led me to attend writers’ conferences, and to join and lead a writer’s critique group with the San Diego Christian Writer’s Guild. I enjoy writing historical fiction, inspirational romance, gardening articles, non-fiction articles, and devotionals.  In addition to works listed above, some of my current writing projects include my biweekly devotional blog, a devotional book in progress with the working title of Come to the Garden: Devotions and Horticulture Tips, which has gardening tips with related devotions; and Meet Me on the Bridge, a WWII inspirational romance based in England and France. I was a contributing editor of devotionals for Moms In Touch International (now called Moms in Prayer International). My non-fiction articles appear in California GardenBGC World, and San Diego Family Magazine, to name a few.

When I’m not writing, I’m usually hanging out with my family, teaching elementary students to garden, reading to students, helping in ministries at church, working in my yard, quilting, or curling up with a good book.
