Attributes of God: A to Z. P – Powerful

God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God. Psalm 62:11 (NKJV)

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

My favorite power would find my housework done by wiggling my nose like Samantha Stevens did on Bewitched. Alas, that power is fictional. Yard work and dirty floors still need my attention.

Some people may want the power to fly or to see through walls, while others would choose the ability or finances to have robots, cars, or other tools to subdue enemies.

In the real world, people seek power in other forms such as fame, wealth, business, or politics.

The All-Powerful One.

Scripture tells us that power belongs to God (Psalm 62:11). His voice and His word are powerful (Psalm 29:4; Hebrews 4:12). God’s power shatters the enemy (Exodus 15:6). He provides salvation to all who believe in Jesus Christ. Who can compare to God?

To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name; by the greatness of his might and because he is strong in power, not one is missing….Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. Isaiah 40: 25–26, 28 (ESV)

God doesn’t have an Achilles heel, or grow weak in the proximity of some substance like fictional heroes. He doesn’t have a character flaw or negative behavior like we so often see of people in the news.

We can have a super-power.

God doesn’t weaken or grow tired, but He remembers that we are powerless. The prophet Isaiah continues with this assurance of God’s help to us.

He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:29–31 (ESV)

The key in the above passage is waiting for the LORD. He gives us new strength. He refreshes us.

* How do you wait for the LORD? When is that hard to do? When is it easier?

Waiting is harder when I don’t see the changes I desire in me or in someone else. I question if they will occur. Waiting’s easier when I dig into God’s word, listen to Christian music, or I’m in nature and reflect on the Creator. When I remember what God has already done, such as job provisions and bringing my terminally ill dad into a closer relationship with Him, it’s easier to know that He is still the One who holds the power in any situation.

Paul pleaded for the Lord to remove something that weakened him. God refused, and Paul learned that God’s grace and power were enough.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

Like Paul, we don’t have to do things in our own strength or have a weakness removed. We need Christ’s power.

I don’t have the ability to effortlessly get my house clean, but I have a better super-power. I have the power of God on my side. Do you?

How great is Your power, Mighty God! Thank you for the power and strength You provide when I lean on You. May You get the glory as Your power is shown in my life. Amen.
