Soil & Growth Part 1 of 4: How’s Your Spiritual Soil?

Therefore hear the parable of the sower: …But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, and indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Matthew 13: 18, 23 NKJV

The soil where I live is not very good in many places. Close to the street it is partly clay. Deep puddles take a long time to dry out, and then the surface often sets into a hard layer. Closer to the house the soil is part clay and part sand. Some areas are rocky. The weeds are the only things that seem to grow without a lot of effort. I pull out rocks, crab crass, and dandelions. After wiping my brow, I grab my shovel and dig and turn the soil with added amendments such as compost and manure to improve the soil structure. Fertilizer is added to provide the required nutrients so the plants can grow. It’s the only way I’ll have beautiful flowers and tasty vegetables.

***

The Lord Jesus told the parable of the sower sowing seed, comparing the conditions of the various soils, or hearts, in response to the sowing of the Word of God (Matthew 13:1–23; Mark 4:1–20; Luke 8:4–15). The seed sown in good soil did the best, just as the seeds sown in my soil-amended flower beds grew better than those in the partial-clay soil of my yard.

Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for awhile, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.” Luke 8:11–14 ESV

Hearts that are hard, rocky or full of thorns won’t produce a good harvest.

Oh, that we would have hearts with good soil so we can be who God wants us to be! Let’s dig into God’s Word and apply it, drawing in the spiritual food we need so we can be fruitful for Him! Jesus described the hearts with good soil.

As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.” Luke 8:15 ESV

Bear fruit with patience. Not all areas in our lives are quickly conformed to Christ. Some areas are like fast growing radishes or strawberries, while other areas may be like the boysenberries that appear on the second year growth. All require the good soil of an obedient heart to be fruitful.

The Lord had another lesson in the parable. The sower did not spread his seeds only where he thought best. He sowed seed everywhere- on the roadside, in the rocky soil, and among the thorns. As Christians, we are to sow the Word everywhere. We are not to judge who needs Christ or who will accept the word; our job is to tell others of Christ, remembering that “it is God who gives the increase.” (I Corinthians 3:6 NKJV).

Dear Lord, I want to be fertile soil, to have a heart that hears and understands Your Word. Help me to obey You and to bear righteous fruit with patience. Help me to not be judgmental or fearful, but to share Your Word, sowing seed for Your harvest. Amen.

A Needed Response to Christ’s Death and Resurrection

Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here; but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and on the third day rise.” Luke 24:5b–7 ESV

How do people respond to the Cross, and the death and Resurrection of Jesus?

At His cross we see indifference as the crowd watched the spectacle of the day. Followers of Jesus grieved and watched. Others mocked or blasphemed Jesus, some from their cruelty, others from their religious view that excluded seeing their need for the promised Savior who came to take away their sin.

And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the king of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” And the robbers who were with him also reviled him the same way. Matthew 27:39–44 ESV

The soldiers also mocked him…” Luke 23:37a ESV

The grace of God in the cross of Christ can transform anyone, even the one who ridicules Jesus.

One robber on the cross turned from belligerently mocking Jesus to belief in Him. The criminal saw the justice of his own punishment, and he recognized the innocence and deity of Jesus Christ. His belief is shown in his response to the other robber’s taunts to Jesus.

But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:40–43

How gracious our Lord is! He didn’t have to reassure the man that he would join Him, yet He tells him “…today you will be with me in paradise.” The sinner did not need to live righteously or earn his way into Christ’s presence. He didn’t have to do good works, be baptized, or say a prescribed set of words. All he needed was to believe in Christ Jesus.

The centurion and fellow soldiers had crucified many people before crucifying Jesus. Consider their response to Jesus’ death.

So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!” Matthew 27: 54 NKJV

How do we respond to Jesus’ death and resurrection?

Does Jesus’ Resurrection affect how we live life? Or do we dismiss His resurrection as a hoax? (Matthew 28: 11–15)

Are we too fearful to tell others that He was risen? (Mark 16:1–8)

The apostle Thomas doubted Jesus’ resurrection, refusing to believe unless he could see Jesus personally. Do we doubt and want proof before we wholeheartedly follow Jesus? (John 20:25)

Let’s believe! Let’s tell others of Jesus, as the women eventually did after learning that He was risen. (Luke 24:22, 23 and Matthew 28: 5–11a)

Lord, I believe You are risen from the dead. Help me to put my faith in You into action. Amen.
